Right to Have a Support Person/Caregiver at Appointments

From the Wisconsin Department of Health Services

February 2, 2021

This email was sent from the Governor’s Committee for People with Disabilities Executive Committee.

The Governor's Committee for People with Disabilities (GCPD) is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of individuals with disabilities. GCPD consults with and advises the Office of the Governor and state agencies on a variety of issues affecting people with disabilities in Wisconsin, including legislation, programs, and policies.

GCPD and its constituent councils have been closely monitoring the impact COVID-19 is having on people with disabilities. National data is clear; people with disabilities are at greater risk than the general population to contract the virus, to be hospitalized for it, and, tragically, to die from it. For this reason, it is more important than ever that people with disabilities be afforded equal access to health care services.

GCPD is seeking additional information regarding how this pandemic has affected access to health care and medical treatment. In addition, GCPD would also like to learn more from caregivers, support persons, or provider agencies related to how COVID-19 has impacted your ability to effectively support a person with a disability in health care settings.

Information is being gathered to assess how modified policies and procedures that have been implemented by health care providers may be impacting people with disabilities throughout the state and how this may be impacting access to medical care and treatment. GCPD will use this data to engage in conversations and dialogue aimed at improving access to health care for people with disabilities, both during the pandemic and into the future.
